Or really maybe it should be IN appropriate appropriations. Here are three promotional images used to sell these Native American costumes. The first thing I noticed was the choice of models. It seems to better sell the costumes to use “native” looking models. All three models have a dark complexion and dark hair. The next thing I noticed was the outfits themselves. The fringe, the accessories, the older woman's “loin-cloth-esque” extra fabric, are meant to represent what a native American would have worn. Unfortunately, none of these costumes would represent this.
Additionally, it appears minority groups are often imitated in costume on Halloween. Many don ponchos and sombrero's and go “Mexican.” Others choose pinstripes and fire-arms and go “Gangster.” Really, there are so many things you could dress up as! Why do people feel it is okay to imitate these sensitive figures on this holiday. It seems trick-or-treaters and party-goers are missing the point with these outfits. These are CULTURES not COSTUMES. They shouldn't be imitated for the delight of the holiday. These costumes are as racist, outdated and insensitive as black-face.
