Key and Peele is a sketch-based comedy show which is currently airing its fourth season on Comedy Central. These guys know how to bring rhetoric to comedy, and in this clip especially. The satire addresses many cold-button issues through a rewrite of the Army Running Cadence. The chant is repurposed with some controversial lines. One: "from poor families near and far we roam / so the rich kids can just stay at home." Another, "when I come home with PTSD / veteran’s hospital won't care for me." These lines suggest these comedians assertion that these issues are not going un-noticed and would do well to be addressed. I have paired this clip with an "Army Strong" commercial. The commercial suggests, essentially, "be a hero, be a star, the army will set you up for life." These types of commercials are often aired on the Comedy Central network targeting their 20 something male demographic. Key and Peele’s satirical rewrite demonstrates what these un-informed youths are really signing up for when they enter the United States Armed Forces. The duo's sketches often take a feminist approach in identifying race and class differences and these longtime friends love stirring people up with their edgy satire. I chose these two pieces to demonstrate the combative rhetorical strategies of the Viacom network versus these two comedians. I think comedy is one of the only mediums which has the gumption to address a lot of problems which go unidentified today. So kudos to you Key and Peele. We hope you remain brazen enough to keep risking your paychecks for the greater good of media!
