I love the philosophy behind the "coexist" campaign. It is easy to denote from the first image that the collection of religious symbols spelling the word coexist is designed to show, just as these symbols can create this word, humans can tolerate one another and come together in a similar fashion.
The second image is a disgrace to the co-exist campaign. It changes the intention of religious tolerance, so that we see one symbol re-purposed to highlight a stereotype associated with the religion it signifies. I think this second image could mean two things. The first, perhaps this image suggests this religion not be grouped in with the others. The second intention might be to demonstrate those embracing the co-exist philosophy don't know what each symbol they're advertising means.
Either way I think humanizing the star and crescent to make it look like a forebodeing terrorist is incredibly insensitive as it is wrong to stereotype a belief based on the actions of a small sub-culture. The re-purpose of the image completely undermines the true message.
